What do I need to know about renting/purchasing a film from Pathé Thuis?

Last updated on 28 March 2025

Subtitles
You can choose to turn the subtitles on or off. You can do so with the icon for audio and subtitles. On a Smart TV this icon can be found in the top right corner, on the website it is located on the bottom right. The subtitles are only available in Dutch, not in another language.

Please note: this option is not always available for older films. These films are supplied by the film studios including subtitles, so there is no option to turn them off.

Do I buy or rent a film?
At Pathé Thuis you can rent or buy a film. Below you will discover the difference between the two options.

When you rent a film, it will remain in your account for 30 days until you start the film. After starting, you can watch it for 48 hours, after which the film will disappear from your account. You can rent a film from €2.49 to €4.99 in standard quality (SD). For higher quality (HD) you often pay €1.00 extra.

You buy a film if you want to watch it more often, because there is no time limit. You pay a higher price for buying a film, because this film can be watched unlimitedly. The price of a purchased film depends on the title. After purchasing, the film remains in your account, under "Mijn films".

For some films there may be no rental rights available. If so, this film is temporarily only available for purchase. This may change in the future. Most films can be rented as well as purchased.

Rent & purchase films are accessible in EU member states, not outside of them. Please note that you must be in the Netherlands to create an account.

You can rent/purchase films in several ways:

  • Pay for a single film via iDEAL, credit card (desktop/laptop only), linked bank account or PayPal
  • Rent/purchase a film via Pathé Thuis credit

How long is a film available to watch?
How long a film is available to watch depends on whether you have rented or purchased the film.
Have you rented the film? Then you have 30 days to start the film. After starting, the film will remain available to watch for 48 hours. You can watch the film as often as you want within this period. After 48 hours, the rental period expires and the film is no longer available. Did you buy a film? Then it is yours and there is no time limit. So you can watch the film unlimitedly!

Why is it not possible to rent a certain film?
We take out a license for the films we offer. In as many cases as possible, we try to offer the film for both rental and purchase. Unfortunately, this is not always possible due to rights, so it may happen that a film is (temporarily) only available for purchase.

It is also possible that the film is not yet available at Pathé Thuis and has yet to be released. In that case, it is usually stated with the film when it will be available.
