HOW IT STARTED

In 1921, Abraham Tuschinski opened the Tuschinski theatre after two years of construction. The original clothing maker from Poland was on his way to the United States in 1904, but eventually stayed in Rotterdam, where he opened several cinemas. In 1916, together with his brothers-in-law Herman Gerschtanowitz and Hermann Ehrlich, he wanted to start something special in Amsterdam.

"Amsterdam has many theatres, but if I build one, it should far surpass all others. Grandiose as a temple and beautiful as a palace, a theatre that is unparalleled in Europe, and will make even the pampered Amsterdam audience puff with admiration." - Abraham Tuschinski

ONE OF A KIND

This drive for originality and admiration was always at the forefront of Theatre Tuschinski: imitation of other theatres was out of the question for Abraham Tuschinski. This is reflected in the many changes Tuschinski's interior has gone through and the many special elements that characterise the theatre. Under Tuschinski's reign, the theatre was never finished.

EXTERIOR & INTERIOR

Designed by architect Hijman Louis de Jong, the building was completed under the direction of engineer D.C. Klaphaak. In the run-up to the theatre's tenth anniversary in 1931, Tuschinski's innovation drive came to a climax. Many eye-catching elements in the current interior date from that time.

A large number of (decorative) artists were brought in to furnish and decorate the interior, including Willem Komhout, Pieter den Besten and Jaap Gidding. Inspired by Piet den Besten's paintings, Hall 2 and Hall 3 were restored to their iconic original style in 2019. In 2020, halls 4, 5 and 6 of Tuschinski have also been revamped with luxury seats and benches.
