HISTORY

Designed by renowned architect Jan Wils, Amsterdam's City Theatre was built in 1935. The City Theatre is one of the few remaining examples in Amsterdam of the Nieuwe Bouwen movement. It was a progressive design for its time.

ARCHITECTURE

It was characterised by its sleek, high façade and its construting transparent tower with spiral staircase that was lit from within at night. As a result, the City Theatre soon became a household name in the nightlife random Leidseplein.

In 1943, the building slowly fell into disrepair and a few years later the original facade was completely hidden behind cladding. In 2007, the building and its facade in particular were restored to their former glory.

The presence of Jan Wils' original drawings, along with photographs and detailed film footage of the 1935 construction process, were essential to making this reconstruction possible. The large areas of brickwork are characteristic of this building. The particularly narrow and long yellow gable stones and black glazed bricks were specially made for the renovation.

Much attention was paid in the reconstruction to the use at night: the vertical light lines and large neon lettering have a defining function for the square and the entertainment area. The unique construction really gives this theatre its own identity, which is also reflected in the film offer. Apart from the big movie titles, City also offers a wide range of Arthouse films.
